In past years, national signing day was a big deal for me. As soon as the college football season ended in January, I started compiling lists of the blue-chip high school players in Texas, and tracking which ones were committing to which schools.
Today was signing day, and as an indication of how things have changed, I spent almost no time following the action on my computer. As of tonight, ESPN has Texas A&M's class rated as 15th best in the nation. Apparently there were a few defections at the last minute, causing their ranking to slide out of the top ten. Future conference opponent Alabama is number one, and Florida, Georgia and LSU are the other SEC schools whose classes are rated higher than A&M's. It looks like most of the superstars signing with TAMU are offensive players, and the defensive talent is mostly B-minus and C-plus quality. That spells trouble in the SEC, where the odds are against you if you're hoping to win by piling up points in a shootout...
