Sumlin's wrong here

On the evening of December 1st, I heard that Sherman had been fired as the Texas A&M head coach, so Friday morning, December 2nd, I bought a hard copy of the Houston Chronicle to read the full details. The big headline in the sports section read "A&M fires Sherman, sets sights on Sumlin." Sherman hadn't yet had his farewell press conference, and a major Texas newspaper was already discussing his replacement. I immediately got suspicious -- there was a bad smell about the situation.

Now, after an alleged nationwide search, Kevin Sumlin has been hired to lead the football team into the uncharted waters of the SEC. He may turn out the be the greatest hire in A&M football history, or the worst. Time will tell, and based on existing precedent, Sumlin's time should be about three years, maybe four.

At any rate, I've decided there are two possibilities: Either (A) the decision to hire Sumlin was made behind closed doors before Sherman's firing was leaked to the press, or (B) Kevin Sumlin really is the best coach who would even consider accepting a job at Texas A&M.

It doesn't matter which of those alternatives is the truth; both are unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.

Added 7:54 pm same day:

I was running around in the car much of the afternoon, listening to the sports talk radio station. Most of what I heard was chatter about the Sumlin hire, and I even heard portions of his press conference and another media interview. I have to admit I was impressed with Sumlin based on what I heard from him, and I'm a lot more satisfied with things today than I was yesterday. I still think the Aggies have a tough row to hoe next year, mainly because of the inexperienced quarterback problem, but Sumlin may have a better debut season than I'm predicting if he's as good as his advocates say he is.
