Now that I have HD television, I've decided to try watching a little college football this season, maybe even a few NFL games. I adopted USC as my new favorite team, and this afternoon they hammered San Jose State. The team that used to be my favorite, Texas A&M, also got the first of four wins predicted by the sports pundits, against New Mexico. I didn't listen to the game, but based on the final score (41-6), TAMU is clearly superior to UNM. Looking at other Big 12 results, tougher days are ahead for the Aggies. Oklahoma State beat Georgia by 14, and Baylor won on the road against Wake Forest. The Okie State result was particularly troubling, because it demonstrated how far A&M has fallen behind them as well as Texas Tech. A&M is now locked in a death struggle with Baylor to avoid the South division cellar, which depresses me for some reason.
Texas pulverized the first of many creampuffs on its schedule, and Oklahoma was upset by Brigham Young after losing Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury, making it a double win night for the longhorns. I watched a good part of Alabama vs Virginia Tech, which was pretty much a head-butting contest between two solid defenses.
Bottom line, football games look terrific in HD on a wide plasma screen. If I can find three or four watchable games every Saturday, it should take my mind off the unmitigated horseshit taking place in the real world.
