Did you know this ?

Re: "NRA fights gun safety," by Sharon Austry, Thursday Letters.

It is because the National Rifle Association is interested in saving lives that they fight the assault weapons ban. The weapons targeted by the assault weapons ban, along with magazines greater than 10 rounds capacity, are the best things for a law-abiding civilian to have for defense if attacked by violent criminals. These weapons and magazines are issued to officers by the FBI, Dallas police and hundreds of other law enforcement agencies because they constitute the best life-saving equipment.

The NRA fights the assault weapons ban because it wants law-abiding citizens to have the best armament available for defense against violent criminals, which is a God-given and constitutional right, and for that, the NRA is to truly be commended.

Jonathan Lospinoso, Dallas

I came across this letter on the editorial page of the Dallas Morning News, and thought I'd better get the word out. I didn't know I needed massive firepower along the lines of an AK-47 assault rifle to protect myself from violent criminals. I thought any good handgun would do the trick. Maybe a shotgun, which could also be used for bird-hunting.

What was I saying about fear ? This guy needs to get a grip. In his world, the streets would be full of people carrying machine guns for protection. That's something I haven't seen even in Baghdad.

Lock and load, folks.
