Football 2014: Week Fourteen

Thanksgiving weekend is when many of the famous college football rivalry games are played, and this season, a few might be worth watching on television.

The annual SEC West game between Texas A&M and LSU isn't a rivalry game in the purest sense, although the teams have played frequently over the decades. This year, the game is played at 6:30 PM on Thursday evening, with the Aggies a 3-point home underdog. The season should screech to an ugly end, and College Football News predicts LSU will win 27-17. This year, LSU is about as vulnerable as I've seen them in a while, and it's too bad A&M isn't strong enough to take advantage of that.

Over in the Big Dumpster Fire, Texas U. gets its replacement Thanksgiving rivalry off the ground at home against new national powerhouse TCU (favored by a TD). CFN thinks the Stronghorns will pull off a 31-27 upset. I won't be around to watch it happen if they do.

The Egg Bowl is meaningful this year, with Mississippi State favored by two points at Ole Miss. The Rebels have fallen on hard times lately, but CFN thinks they'll knock off their rival 27-24. This is the SEC showcase game on CBS at 2:30 PM Saturday, and maybe the best matchup of the weekend. In the Iron Bowl, Auburn is a 9.5 point underdog at Alabama, but CFN thinks the Tide will eke out a close 30-27 victory.

Arkansas is coming on strong as the season winds down, and is a 2-point road favorite at Missouri (on CBS Friday 2:30 PM). CFN expects Mizzou to take the SEC East crown again with a 27-20 defeat of the Razorbacks.

Finally, Florida is at in-state rival Florida State as a 7.5 point underdog. I'm sick of  FSU and J. Winston and would really enjoy seeing the Gators upset the Seminoles. CFN predicts that will happen, as Florida wins a 27-26 nail-biter.

Added 8:14 PM on Thursday 27 November: The Aggies nursed a 7-0 lead for a while, thanks to one long TD run following an interception. This has been one ugly motherfucking football game, and the dam broke late in the second quarter. LSU leads 17-7, and A&M hasn't done a goddamned thing on offense all night. I don't know how much more time I can waste on this shit.

Added 11:22 PM: Thank god this piss-miserable excuse for a season has crawled to its conclusion. Texas A&M falls 23-17, and LSU was just lackluster enough to keep the Aggies within striking range even though their offense was pathetic and their defense was getting run over all night long. The only way things can get worse is if Texas A&M is required to play a bowl game against the Stronghorns. I got so bored watching the A&M offense inch its way through three-and-outs, I started switching to Fox, where I could see TCU kicking the shit out of the horns with a 48-10 beatdown. Unfortunately, as bad as the horns are, I have a feeling they might be good enough to swamp the Aggies.

Added 6:30 on Friday 28 November: Insult added to injury. Texas A&M and Missouri both joined the SEC for the 2012 season. In 2014, the Aggies have not won a single meaningful game on their home field, and Missouri just clinched the SEC East championship by beating Arkansas 21-14. That's back to back division championships for Missouri, proving they belong in the SEC. Meanwhile, A&M is starting to look like the Vanderbilt of the SEC West. That's another reason I resent Missouri, which claimed one of those wins at Kyle Field as a visitor.

Added 10:56 PM on Saturday 29 November: The four best teams in the SEC West paired off today in traditional in-state rivalry games. In the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss turned back Mississippi State 31-17, and Alabama defeated Auburn 55-44 in the Iron Bowl. I hope Kevin Sumlin saw both games because he definitely needs to watch how football is played in this division, and take notes while he's at it. Then he needs to hit the recruiting trail, because right now there aren't ten players on the entire A&M roster who could start for Alabama.
