Football 2014: Week Nine

Texas A&M finally gets the open date they really needed last week, and around here, the standing joke is that open date is a 12-point favorite.

After several Saturdays of high profile matchups, the SEC games this week look fairly lackluster. For example, the 3:00 PM game on the SEC Network is Vanderbilt (2-5) at Missouri (5-2). College Football News has Missouri as a three touchdown favorite, and predicts they'll win 31-14.

The 2:30 showcase game on CBS is unbeaten Mississippi State against Kentucky, a team that's playing better (5-2) than anyone expected this season. Still, Kentucky is a 13.5 point underdog, and CFN expects them to lose 38-24. I'll probably watch some of this to see if the Wildcats can confront the Bulldogs more boldly than the Aggies did.

The first SEC team A&M played in 2014 takes on the next SEC team they'll play at 6:30 PM on the SEC Network. South Carolina, muddling along at 4-3, tries on Auburn as an 18.5 point underdog. CFN calls this a 40-27 loss for Spurrier's visiting team.

In the same time slot on ESPN2, the Crimson Tide visits Tennessee as a 17-point favorite. Last week, Texas A&M made Alabama look like the most awesome team in college football, but CFN predicts a so-so win (31-10) for the Tide over the 3-4 Volunteers.

Finally, at 6:15 on ESPN, Ole Miss at LSU. This is the one game on the schedule that has some potential to be competitive. Ole Miss made a believer of me two weeks ago, and LSU has been relatively unimpressive (by their standards) so far. The Rebels are only favored by 3.5 points, but CFN expects they'll win easily (31-13).

The only non-SEC game on TV that I might watch is Texas at Kansas State (11:00 on ESPN). Against common opponent Oklahoma, the strong-horns lost a close one and KSU won a close one. I hate the wildcats a little less than I hate the horns, so I'll pull for them to hand Charlie another loss to go with the four he already has.

Added 2:12 PM Saturday: I'm ready for football on TV after participating in the Alzheimer's walk this morning. Walked 4.64 miles in 78 minutes. In the early game, Kansas State just handed Strong loss number five with a 23-0 shutout of the longhorns.

Added 6:00 PM Saturday: Add West Virginia to the list of teams that could stomp Texas A&M's ass this year. Today they worked over Oklahoma State 34-10. In the SEC, Kentucky is giving Mississippi State a tougher test than A&M did.

Added 10:28 PM Saturday: The MSU Bulldogs finally subdued Kentucky 45-31, Alabama polished off Tennessee 34-20, and Auburn edged the Gamecocks 42-35. In Baton Rouge, though, LSU removed themselves from my list of possible Texas A&M wins by upsetting the Rebels 10-7. The Aggies may still have a chance at an upset when they play Missouri, who edged Vanderbilt 24-14.
