Football 2017: Week Three

I'm having a hard time getting psyched up for the 2017 season, and I haven't seen an entire game from start to finish yet. Texas A&M is off to a putrid beginning, blowing a 34-point lead and losing to UCLA, then struggling well into the 4th quarter to scratch out a close win over Nicholls last week.

This week, the Aggies get their first early game at 11:00 AM Saturday on SECN. The visiting team is ULL (Louisiana-Lafayette). For inexplicable reasons, the line on this game has A&M favored by 24 points, the total number of points they scored last week. Apparently, ULL has a poor defense, particularly against the run, which is why College Football News predicts A&M will win this mess 55-30. I'll believe it when I see it. Final score update: The first half was the dreadful mess I expected. A&M had several big plays on offense and defense, but lost 24 yards on a bad snap, blew a fake FG attempt, and generally dicked around enough to trail 21-14 at the half. I listened to some of the second half on the car radio while I ran errands, and the Aggies upgraded their performance to win the 3rd and 4th quarters 31-0 for a 45-21 final score. I still haven't seen enough consistency to convince me this team can win more than two SEC games this season, if that many.

The SEC showcase game at 2:30 PM on CBS features (23) Tennessee at (24) Florida, with the Gators favored by 5 1/2 points at home. CFN expects Florida will win without covering the spread, final score 23-19. Final score: Florida won 26-20 with a Hail Mary pass into the end zone for a TD on the game's final play. This is what SEC football should look like.

The SEC evening game that might be worth a look is at 6:00 PM on ESPN. Louisiana State, ranked 12th, will visit Mississippi State as a touchdown favorite. CFN is going with LSU over the Bulldogs 24-16. Final score: MSU gave LSU a whipping, 37-7.
