Civics Lesson

Life is turning out to be a continuing education program for me. One of the things I've learned this year is that our system of government is full of weak spots and loopholes that I didn't realize were there. During my lifetime, the weak spots have been hidden because (a) most of our presidents understood and followed the honor system, or (b) when we had one who didn't, there was an opposition party with enough muscle in Congress to enforce the checks and balances provided by the Constitution.

Between competent, honorable presidents and divided government, the system operated effectively enough to conceal the weaknesses, and the American way was admired and envied by people around the world.

Suddenly, we have a so-called precedent (sic) who craps on the honor system and wipes his butt with pages out of the rule books. That would be horrifying in itself, but while this lunatic is shitting on our living room sofa, there's no opposition party with enough congressional muscle to wrestle him to the floor and get the cuffs on him.

Maybe there's enough left to help us survive the crisis. If we do, Congress needs to get busy on bipartisan legislation that will at least patch the weak spots that Donny Covfefe is exposing with his misconduct (emoluments, conflicts of interest, nepotism, collusion with foreign governments, etc). If the weak spots can be eliminated, that's even better.
