Football 2015: Week Five

Another Saturday of TV games that should be interesting. A pair of Big 12 games are up at 11:00 AM. Texas will be at TCU, and West Virginia plays at Oklahoma. Bleacher Report predicts TCU (favored by 15) will double up on Texas 46-23, and the Sooners (favored by 6.5 points) will cover against West Virginia 34-23. UPDATE: The Sooners won 44-24, and TCU won 50-7.

The 11:00 SEC game has South Carolina at Missouri. Texas A&M gets South Carolina in a few weeks, so I'll try to check out the Gamecocks. Bleacher Report predicts they'll win 21-14, and that would be okay since I hate Mizzou (favored by a FG), and the formula says pull for SC. UPDATE: South Carolina lost to Missouri 24-10.

The SEC showcase game at 2:30 on CBS is Alabama (ranked 13th) at Georgia (ranked 8th). Bleacher Report sees this game as a dogfight, with the Bulldogs edging the Tide 30-28. Georgia is only favored by one point at home. UPDATE: Alabama stomped Georgia's ass 38-10.

Finally, we get two more important SEC games in the evening slot. At 6:00, Ole Miss plays Florida, and Bleacher Report sees the Rebels (a TD favorite) getting by the Gators 30-21. Then at 6:30, Mississippi State is at Texas A&M in a game Bleacher Report thinks the Aggies (favored by 5.5 points) should win fairly comfortably 37-19. On the other hand, I think it's a toss-up game, and I expect the winning margin to be under seven points for either team. UPDATE: Florida rolled Ole Miss 38-10.

In other games, Bleacher Report expects Baylor (favored by 17) to get by Texas Tech in a 57-44 shootout, predicts Oklahoma State (favored by a TD)  will thump Kansas State 31-17, and sees Tennessee (a 6.5 point favorite) taking visiting Arkansas 29-24. UPDATE: Baylor over Texas Tech 63-35, Oklahoma State edged KSU 36-34, and Arkansas stunned Tennessee 24-20.

Update 2:19 PM Saturday: With under 7:00 remaining in the game, the Christians are tearing the Stronghorns a new asshole (50-0).

Update 4:46 PM Saturday: After returning an interception 50 yards for a TD, Alabama leads Georgia 31-3 in the third quarter. Uh oh.

Update 8:12 PM Saturday: A&M leads 24-10 at halftime. With the exception of two possessions, the A&M offense has looked very sharp, and the defense has been satisfactory, other than one long running play for MSU's only TD in the half. One missed FG, and one player ejected on a questionable targeting penalty.

Update 10:02 PM Saturday: The second half was a grind, with both defenses controlling the tempo. The A&M offense went completely cold, but managed to eke out a pair of FGs against one TD for MSU. The final score was 30-17, and although the margin was more than I expected, overall the game was as evenly matched as I thought it would be. There aren't any easy games in this damned conference.
