Football 2014: Week Ten

Texas A&M returns to action Saturday with (A) a real possibility of winning decisively, and (B) a slight possibility that Kenny (Down) Hill will not be the starting quarterback. The Aggies will appear at 11:00 AM on the SEC Network, and are favored by 31.5 points against visiting Louisiana-Monroe. This will probably be the last game A&M plays as a favorite in 2014, and College Football News thinks the Aggies will win fairly easily (48-14).

The other TV games are as follows:
  • Florida vs Georgia (on CBS at 2:30 PM). The Bulldogs are favored by 13 points. Some Aggies want Muschamp to replace Snyder at TAMU. CFN predicts Georgia takes a squeaker (23-20).
  • TCU @ West Virginia (ABC/ESPN at 2:30 PM). TCU is favored by 5 points in the BDF showcase game of the afternoon. I'll watch this after Georgia gets ahead by two TDs.
  • Kentucky @ Missouri (SECN at 3:00 PM). Mizzou is favored by a TD at home. I need an upset here, but probably won't get it. CFN says Missouri wins 23-20.
  • Auburn @ Ole Miss (ESPN at 6:00 PM). A championship elimination game for one team. Ole Miss is picked by a field goal in the day's best SEC game, and CFN selects them to win 34-27.
  • Arkansas @ MSU (ESPN2 at 6:15 PM). The Bulldogs keep rolling, favored at home by 11.5 points over the gritty Razorbacks. CFN says they'll roll 30-17.
  • Tennessee @ South Carolina (SECN at 6:30). The Gamecocks are favored by 8 points versus the Volunteers, and CFN sees them as 34-20 winners.
  • Oklahoma State @ Kansas State (ABC at 7:00). KSU is expected to maul Okie State by 13.5 points. I might watch some of this mess out of boredom.

SATURDAY RESULTS:

Added 2:20 PM Saturday: Final score was 21-16, and it was a struggle from beginning to end. I feel certain now that A&M is a 6-6 team this year. Auburn, Missouri and LSU will eat this bunch alive, although the defense almost played reasonably well against ULM, and was the only thing that kept Sumlin from totally bottoming out in the middle of his third season.

Kyle Allen didn't look much better or worse than (suspended) Kenny Hill probably would have looked. He was adequate in the first half, but couldn't produce a point in the third and fourth quarters. Fortunately, the defense was able to hold ULM to field goals instead of touchdowns on three drives.

TAMU has spent much of the season modeling assorted stylish uniforms, including a retro design today that was intended to remind everyone the Aggies haven't won a national championship in football in 75 years. I thought the shirts and pants were okay, but those "leather" helmets suck. Frankly, I wish they'd just pick a goddamn uniform and stick with it.

Added 10:52 PM: Here's a summary of today's TV action: Muschamp won't be available to replace Snyder after the Gators whupped up on Georgia 38-20, and it would've been more lopsided if Georgia hadn't scored a TD with four seconds remaining. In the BDF, the Christians edged West Virginia 31-30, and Kansas State tore OSU a new asshole 48-14.

Back in the SEC, Arkansas made Mississippi State work before losing 17-10, and Auburn eliminated Ole Miss from national championship consideration 35-31. I don't want to contemplate what Auburn will do to A&M next week, but Sumlin should claim a moral victory if his team loses by less than thirty points.

Finally: Missouri 20 Kentucky 10 and Tennessee 45 South Carolina 42.
