Football 2014: Week Four

The fourth weekend of the season started tonight at 6:30 on ESPN, with Auburn playing at Kansas State. A top SEC team against one of the better teams from the BDF. Giving credit where it's due, KSU lost 20-14 but gave Auburn all they could handle, especially considering that they missed three FG attempts. BDF partisans will argue that KSU was the better team, and lost the game on a pair of turnovers. Anyway, Auburn looked pretty good, but not indestructible. Good teams find ways to win, right?

Three SEC games on TV this Saturday:
  • Texas A&M at Southern Methodist (2:30 PM): The Aggies are favored by 31 or 33, depending on which line you're looking at. Maybe their relatively mundane win over Rice has the oddsmakers thinking twice about how powerful the Aggies actually are. College Football News predicts a 52-10 Aggie win, and I could live with that.
  • Florida at Alabama (2:30 PM): The SEC showcase game of the week on CBS. Florida's better this year, and Alabama looks like they're not as good as last year. Still, it's early and the Tide is a two-touchdown favorite. The CFN prediction says Alabama won't cover the 14 points, but wins 27-17. I'll be channel flipping since the Aggies and this game are in the same afternoon time slot.
  • Mississippi State @ Louisiana State: I'll watch this game to scout two future A&M division opponents. LSU is favored by 9.5 points, and CFN expects them to cover 31-20. I don't particularly care who wins, but will probably pull for MSU based on my formula.
Odds and ends: I'd like to see West Virginia upset Oklahoma, and really love to see Clemson whip Florida State. That Jameis Winston fool is starting to piss me off.

Added 4:15 PM on Saturday 20 September: The Aggies stumbled out of the gate, but SMU is so bad that even sloppy A&M execution couldn't help them. They trail 38-3 at the half, but might do better against the Aggie 2nd and 3rd teamers that should be on the field in the second half.

Added 5:55 PM same day: Final score 58-6, which is pretty good considering Sumlin doesn't run up scores as a rule. On CBS, Alabama outclassed Florida 42-21. For A&M, the cakewalk is over and the meatgrinder of the SEC West is about to begin. Next up is Arkansas, which may be a win but won't be an easy one.

Added 8:00 PM same day: West Virginia is giving Oklahoma all they can handle, and MSU is kicking ass at LSU. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
